More Yoga Mudras continued


Hi everyone. As promised, I am back with more Yoga Mudras. Hope some of you must have tried some of the Mudras and are already on the way to a healthy life.

Let’s look at some more Mudras today.

*    Apaan Mudra

Join the tips of the thumb, the middle finger and the ring finger while keeping other fingers straight effortlessly. This is known as Apaan Mudra. You can say that it is a combination of Aakash Mudra and Prithvi Mudra. The best thing about this Mudra is that it helps to remove any types of toxins accumulated in any part of your body e.g. cough, phlegm, sweat, urine, stool etc. By releasing the toxins it purifies your body and revitalizes you. Thus it helps to remove all the waste and excess through eyes, ears, nose, mouth, genitals and anus. It is very beneficial in constipation, gastric problems and flatulence. 

Those suffering from piles can immensely benefit from this Mudra. 

Some people suffer from urine  obstruction and are not able to pass urine satisfactorily thereby accumulating toxins in their kidneys, gall bladder, liver and genitals. Doing Apaan Mudra daily for 30-45 minutes will help you get rid of this problem. 

For females suffering from irregular or painful menstrual cycles this Mudra is a blessing.

It is also very useful in diabetes.

A word of caution: This Mudra should not be done by ladies during pregnancy.

*    Apaan Vayu Mudra

The combination of Vayu Mudra and Apaan Mudra is known as Apaan Vayu Mudra. Bend the index finger and join it to the base of the thumb. Now join the tips of the thumb, middle finger and ring finger while keeping the little finger straight. This Mudra is also called as Mrit Sanjeevani Mudra (life savior Mudra). Why? I will elaborate further. To begin with, this mudra can be done after your lunch and dinner for 15 minutes each. Many people experience heaviness in chest and stomach after eating and feel bloated and belch. Do this mudra as it releases the gases formed and gives you immediate relief. If you have bowel issues in the morning and have trouble relieving yourself  or suffer from chronic constipation- probably due to sedentary lifestyle then this mudra will work wonders for you. As soon as you wake up, sit in the bed and do this mudra. Within few minutes you will feel pressure in the stomach and will be able to pass the bowels easily.

Now talking about the life saving aspect of this Mudra, let me elaborate that Apaan Vayu Mudra can save the life of a person during a heart attack. If a person at the time of heart attack keeps presence of mind (normally the heart attack victim is in panic so it is quite tough but people around him can act with presence of mind) and does this Mudra then this can act like a life-saving injection or a Sorbitrate tablet given to a patient during heart attack. How? 

The scientific explanation- The bent index finger suppresses Vayu (air element) thus reducing the pain during heart attack. By joining the tips of middle finger (Aakash – ether/space element), ring finger (earth element) and thumb (fire element) the proportion of all three elements in the body has increased. (Remember the first blog on Mudras- tip of any finger joined to the tip of thumb increases the corresponding element of that finger and joining the tip of the finger to the base of the thumb decreases the corresponding element of that finger). As the fire element related to thumb is increased it thereby results in increasing the heat in the body which further removes impurities in the blood. By joining tip of middle finger, the Aakash/space element is increased resulting in increase in the space in the arteries and supplying more oxygen to the heart. By joining tip of  ring finger, the Prithvi/earth element increases which helps to strengthen the heart muscles. Thus the life of the person is saved!

This will relieve all the further symptoms and pains till the support system or doctor arrives and patient can be shifted to the hospital easily.

*    Prana Mudra

Join the tips of the little finger and the ring finger to the tip of the thumb while keeping other fingers straight easily. This is known as Prana Mudra. This mudra can be done anytime during the day. This is a very important mudra as it increases the Prana or Life Force Energy in the body. It can be done even in an illness or if you are feeling sick.

The simplest explanation about this Mudra would be that it increases Life Force Energy in your body i.e. it enhances your immunity strength.  Physically weak people must definitely do this mudra as it imparts physical strength, energy, activeness and agile body. By doing this mudra one feels refreshed and invigorated hence it is an energy booster or like a vitamin pill.

Especially if you are an adventurer, hiker, mountaineer, rock climber or involved in any other strenuous activity then this is an elixir for you. You don’t need to rely on any energy bar or energy drink. Do this Mudra for e.g. while climbing a hill and you will not feel exhausted or short of breath. Try it!

This Mudra also helps in improvement of eyesight. If done after lunch or dinner for 10 minutes this can help ease digestion of food.
Ideally this mudra can be done for 45 minutes during the day time.

*    Shankh Mudra

Curl all the fingers of your right hand around your left thumb. Touch the tips of your right thumb and left middle finger keeping other left hand fingers parallel to the left middle finger. You will see that the shape of your hands resembles a Shankh or Conch shell. This is known as Shankh Mudra.

A Conch shell when blown emits a sound. Likewise this Mudra too is associated with the sound. Practicing it regularly helps remove issues related to throat and vocal cords. This Mudra is a boon to people associated with singing profession or those who consider their voice as an asset. It aids the digestion process thereby resulting in increase in appetite.

This mudra acts on a more subtle level and instills peace of mind, calmness, serenity and tranquility – all the by-products of meditation that are of obvious nature.

*    Linga Mudra

Interlock the fingers of both the hands and keep the thumb (either right thumb or left thumb) erect. This is known as Linga Mudra. In Sanskrit language, Linga means phallus (male genital organ).

This mudra has to be done as per requirement and not in excess as it increases the body heat and temperature. Hence it is very beneficial when you have a bad cold or shiver. It also helps reduce chronic cough. Those who are intolerable to cold weather and changing weathers can practice this mudra as it generates heat in your body. I have tried this mudra myself and vouch for the fact that it’s results were immediate. One winter night when I was feeling cold, I deliberately removed my sweater and shirt and did this mudra for 12-15 minutes and I started feeling warm.

As stated above do this mudra only till the problem persists and stop immediately once it is overcome. 

Friends, as mentioned above these are some mudras that normally a person would need in his mundane life considering the urban lifestyle, however the list of mudras is not exhaustive. There are many more to be revealed but that would depend only on the necessity or specific requirement to know more about them.

Yoga Mudras for healthy lifestyle

Hi everyone. Today I am going to share more yoga mudras and their benefits with you as promised in my previous blog. Also, I am going to publish a new post every Monday henceforth so that you will get something beneficial at the start of each week.

·        ·        Gyan Mudra

Touch the tip of index finger and thumb keeping other three fingers straight. Don’t keep the other fingers stiff deliberately. This mudra is called Gyan Mudra and can be done while walking, sitting, cycling or even driving. The effect of this mudra is that it makes your mind calm and relaxed. It helps control your temper if you are short-tempered. Peace of mind, concentration, happiness and reducing depression and tension are some of the benefits that Gyan Mudra imparts. Those with unstable mind, emotional insecurities, fear, anxieties, impulsive behavior and even laziness or procrastination can benefit a lot. Do this mudra daily for 45 minutes at stretch if possible and you will see considerable results within 3 months. It is highly recommended to students. The spiritual seekers during meditation if focus their attention on the joint of the index finger and thumb for a few seconds to few minutes then they can more easily and effortlessly move towards the state of trance. Insomnia can be effectively treated if you do this mudra while sleeping or lying in the bed. You will definitely get good sleep.

·        ·        Vayu Mudra

Touch the tip of index finger to the base of thumb keeping the other fingers straight. Fold the thumb over the bent index finger. This mudra is called Vayu Mudra and it helps balance the air (vayu) element in the body. Certain ailments like flatulence, back pain, arthritis, rheumatism, sciatica, spondylitis can be reduced, however it has to be done for a long time (few months) and has to be stopped when the effects are visible. Many times while sleeping we experience body pain and stiffness due to ceiling fan overhead. When we wake up our body, especially the back becomes stiff, however, if you do this mudra before sleeping you will notice that you won’t experience the stiffness of the body next morning. The unusual increase of air element inside the tissues, nerves and cells results in pain which can be lessened and cured by doing Vayu mudra. But be sure to stop doing this mudra once you have got rid of the pain.

·        ·        Aakash Mudra

Join the tips of middle finger and the thumb while keeping the other fingers straight effortlessly. This is called Aakash mudra. It can be done from 15-45 minutes daily as per requirement. This can help reduce weakness of the bones to a great extent. Those suffering from ear and heart ailments can benefit a lot by doing this mudra.

·        ·        Shunya Mudra

Join the tip of the middle finger to the base of the thumb and fold the thumb over the bent middle finger. Keep other fingers straight without any strain or effort. This is known as Shunya Mudra. It can be done from 15-60 minutes as per requirement. The best benefit of this mudra is for curing ear- related issues. Any type of hearing problem or ear pain can be lessened to a great degree if you do this mudra for minimum 20 minutes. Those who too often cling to their mobile phones and complain of hearing a faint humming sound even after the call is over, this mudra can work wonders for them. The frequent flyers when airborne feel the pain in their ears at high altitudes. Don’t worry. Shunya Mudra can be the most effective solution for this. Next time when on flight do try it.
            It is also a very effective remedy for thyroid problems, nausea, deafness, vertigo and vomiting.

·        ·        Prithvi mudra

Join the tips of ring finger and thumb keeping other fingers straight with ease.  This is known as prithvi mudra. It can be done to increase the prithvi i.e. earth element inside the body. It helps you gain weight and enhances physical endurance. You experience a surge of strength in your body and your physical stamina boosts. Immunity is enhanced to a high degree, thus aiding you in spiritual journey as well. Healthy body and a healthy mind are necessary for spiritual growth.
A very common application of this mudra is to do it when you need to defecate or poo urgently but have to wait for unwillingly. You will be able to control the urge for sometime saving you the embarrassment.

Prithvi mudra if done for 30 minutes everyday gives you amazing results. Invigoration, vitality and strengthening of bones, skin, nail and hair are guaranteed if you practice it regularly. Rather than popping your vitamin pills every now and then try doing this mudra.

·        ·        Surya Mudra

Join the tip of the ring finger to the base of the thumb while keeping other fingers straight. Fold the thumb over the bent ring finger. This is known as Surya mudra (Sun element). This mudra is extremely beneficial for weight loss. If possible, try to do it while sitting cross legged – padmasana (lotus position) or sukhasana (easy pose) every morning and evening for 15 minutes each.
As the earth element (Prithvi) is decreased and the Fire element (Agni) is increased this mudra improves the metabolism of your body aids digestion thereby resulting in weight and fat loss. It regulates the body temperature and raises your tolerance to shivering and cold. Those suffering from hunger pangs, constant food cravings and gluttony will find these tendencies disappear after practicing Surya mudra regularly. Last but not the least it also helps to strengthen your eyesight.

So this is a boon for the obese people who are fighting a battle to lose weight and seem to get frustrated over a period of time. Try adding Surya mudra to your weight loss exercise regimen and see the wonderful results!

·        ·        Varun Mudra

Joining the tips of the little finger and the thumb while keeping other fingers straight is known as Varun mudra. This mudra can be done for as much time necessary. It increases the water element, thereby curing all the ailments arising due to lack of water in the body. It increases the moisture in the skin and helps cure skin dryness, cracks and eruptions. It purifies your blood by increasing the water element and gives a glow to your skin. Gastroenteritis, dryness of mouth, loss of taste, constipation, indigestion and dehydration can be effectively dealt with if you practice this mudra for at least 45 minutes everyday.

·      ·        Ruksha mudra

Join the tip of the little finger and the base of the thumb keeping other fingers straight. This is known as Ruksha mudra. This mudra helps in decreasing the excessive water content in your body.  Since this mudra reduces the water content in your body, avoid doing it for a long time. Once you see that the ailment is cured you should stop doing it. Those suffering from frequent and excessive urination and excessive sweating can benefit a lot by practicing this regularly.

Hi all

Before I share more mudras with you let me share few basic tips once again.

  • There is no age restriction to do any mudra.
  • There is absolutely no particular or specific time of the day when you can or cannot do mudra. It can be done anytime.
  • No restriction of place. These can be easily done when walking, sitting (relaxing), standing position (bus or train station queue), watching TV, conversation with someone (no one will even notice your fingers), lying in the bed, driving your car (only if it’s possible for you) or doing any other work……the list is endless. Just let your imagination run wild.
  • When you do any mudra do it with ease. Do not apply deliberate pressure or keep your fingers too stiff. The only important thing is that the finger should merely touch the tip or the base of the thumb.
  • If possible try to do mudra with both hands. However as stated above if you are engaged in some work with one hand then you can do mudra with other hand alone. It works fine. I have tried myself. I will share my personal experiences.
  • Any mudra should be done for at least 45 minutes in the entire day. If able to do for 45 minutes at a stretch it’s great however if not possible then you can do 10-15 minutes mudra session 4-5 times in a day. If required it can be done more than the prescribed time as well.
  • Few mudras show quick results whereas some may need 2-6 months for the same. Have faith and patience and do regularly. Remember it’s tried and tested knowledge and proven since ancient times. You don’t need any extra effort or time for it.
  • The most awaited question would be - if I can do mudra when under medication? Yes. They do not interfere with your medicines in any way.
  • Last but not the least- Whether you do mudras with faith or without they still give you results. It’s unconditional.

Hi! I am posting a very short video of a rose flower from my garden. The purpose is to prove the audio visual impact on our brain. It’s a very simple video and no external sounds/music added. So here you need to focus on the sound of your own breath. The visual will be the video of the flower. The video duration is only 49 seconds.

Here the trick is when the video starts focus your eyes only on the rose flower. Though the video is not HD (for that matter even our naked eyes are not) just focus on the bright colour of the petals, the light and dark hues of pink or the tiny water droplets on the rose. The visual part is done.

Now as soon as you start watching the video consciously be aware of your breathing and try to listen to your breath. Now you have focused your audio sensory perception as well.

Now listen to your breath and get engrossed watching the rose. Once the video clip finishes close your eyes and visualize the rose and hear your breath simultaneously. Do so for a minute. Again open your eyes and re-run the video. Do the same process. Try to explore the beauty of the rose with eyes open and eyes closed. Do so for 5 minutes. After 5 minutes itself you will surprisingly experience the soothing effect on your mind as it will have calmed down. 
This is nothing but a glimpse of meditation which otherwise many think would need an extra time to sit in a quiet place and play some soulful music to derive benefits of meditation. Not really necessary if you need a quick-fix like this! Next time you can pick up any object near you (and it does not have to be a beautiful one). Fix your gaze, focus on your breath and let the Yogi in you come out.

This can be a great stress buster especially at your work place when you experience the blues you can resort to this 5 minute meditation technique. 
To begin with I will share these Mudras in my blog and later also come up with videos for the same.

The ancient knowledge of Mudras says if tip of the thumb is touched to the tip of any other finger then it increases the particular element in your body belonging to the touched finger. E.g. If you touch the tip of the little finger to the tip of the thumb keeping other fingers straight then it increases the water element in your body represented by the little finger. This is called Varun Mudra. This helps deal with dryness of the skin, relieves from gastro, acidity problems and dryness of mouth and throat.

Now if your body type already has excess of water element then it would not be wise to do this mudra.
If the tip of any finger is touched to the base of the thumb then the particular element represented by that finger decreases. In the above mentioned case if you touch the tip of the little finger to the base of the thumb then it will decrease the water element in your body. This is called Ruksha Mudra. People who sweat excessively can benefit a lot from this mudra. If you have to urinate urgently but cannot rush then this mudra can help control the pee for sometime saving you from embarrassment.

I will explain in detail each Mudra and its benefits and few pointers when it should be done and when avoided.

Hi all. Today I am going to share few more health tips and contribute to your well being in my own little way. We all read a lot about yogasanas these days and see celebrities endorsing different yoga types like Ashtanga yoga, Hatha yoga, Vinyasa yoga etc. Let’s start with more simple and easy-to-do practices that can be adopted by a common person regardless of age, gender, occupation and time availability.

I am talking about Yoga Mudras. What are Mudras? In a layman’s term it simply means the gestures of our hands. Using the ten fingers in different gestures we try to regulate the flow of the energy in our body. Remember that we are not just a physical body. We earlier learnt about the five bodies. Our body is made up of five elements- Fire, Air, Aakash (Ether), Earth and Water.  

Thumb represents              Fire
Index finger represents        Air 
Middle finger represents      Aakash (Ether)
Ring finger represents         Earth
Little finger represents        Water

It’s been documented in the ancient scriptures how mudras can be used to balance the energy in our body, get rid of the ailments and gain overall health. It’s a time- tested and proven technique that enhances your health at the subtle level which normally a physical exercise would not necessarily and consciously contribute to. When doing a physical exercise we are too involved with muscles, fats, biceps, triceps etc. keeping in mind our outer appearance to carve a beautiful body. But the beautiful body has to be equally fit inside as well.

Mudras come handy as they can be done by anyone, anywhere and anytime. Yes! There is absolutely no restriction of any age, place or particular time or doing it before or after meals. It can be done even when you are watching TV or doing some other work. How? If you are writing something or talking with someone or a group of friends or family members at home or outside is it possible to do any physical exercise or breathing exercise or mediation for that matter simultaneously? No.

However you can do Mudras as you simply have to join your fingers together and no one might even notice it! It’s advantageous to use both hands however you can do this with one hand alone even if you are doing some work with other hand. It’s so simple.

Hi everyone. It’s been a long time since I interacted with you. But I am going to make sure that henceforth I do it regularly. In context to the previous blog I am going to keep my promise and share different yogic techniques that too specifically aimed for men, women and kids respectively. Considering the age factor, the lifestyle and the gender I will discuss with you definite and easy-to-do exercises to keep you healthy. Again by health I do not simply mean physical health. A person may have a herculean physique but if he lacks mental clarity and emotional maturity then overall the person is not healthy. 

Likewise a person with a good intellect say for example a studious and intelligent kid is so devoted to his studies that he neglects his physical health and undermines its importance and will certainly grow into a weakling (physically) and not be able to sustain in the highly competitive world – the very purpose for which it seems to him that he should focus only on studies and nothing else. Today studies have proved that a good physical health is conducive to mental health. It’s a healthy mind in the healthy body.

Talking about the career woman today it is evident how many roles she has to play. She is a daughter, a mother, a wife, a daughter-in-law and a working woman above all. The expectations come from every quarter. Such a multi-tasking person definitely deserves to take care of her own health while catering to everybody’s needs.
In a nutshell everyone must take care of his/her own health in the best possible way. Be strong.
